Through the tradition of the handmade pot, I work to create a moment of pause for the user, where the acts of looking and using bring about reflection. This creates an interval in the normal, chaotic flow of life. My investigation of process, form and function is centered on bringing importance to everyday experiences. My current studio practice is, in part, working as Silvie Granatelli’s studio assistant. This position gives me the opportunity to explore the life of a potter. Since coming to Floyd, I have spent more time in the studio than I ever have before. This has made me more attentive, both to my pots themselves, and to the role they play in other’s lives.
My exploration of form and surface is constantly bringing me closer to an understanding of my pots and their functions. I wish to make people stop and pay attention, as much to their own lives as to the work itself. In making pots, I am forced to take time and care in order to create a product worthy of sharing with others. Through this making, I search for ways in which an object’s visual and physical characteristics can draw the user into a closer relationship with its function. Your interaction with these pieces completes them.
My pots are wheel thrown. At the leather hard stage I carve into the clay to create visual textures and designs that embrace the forms. I work with porcelain clay, fired in a gas kiln to 2300 F.
