My interest in ceramics developed while touring the traditional potteries in North Carolina while in graduate school in the late 60s. My wife and I become avid collectors of work and approximately twenty years ago we purchased some studio equipment and my wife established a small studio in our home. This was “her hobby”, but since I like to work with my hands I finally decided to give it a try. I did not find it an easy skill to acquire, but I developed a real interest in the process and began to utilize the studio in my spare time. My interest was nurtured by courses in ceramics at Syracuse University, and workshops via the university and the ceramics guild in Syracuse. Although at times frustrating, “throwing pots” has provided endless avenues for refinement of craftsmanship and development of style. We moved to Floyd, Virginia five years ago and I was without a studio for several years while I built our house. I now have a working studio and Floyd is home to numerous potters who have been extremely encouraging and helpful. While my style is still evolving, my current work consists primarily of high fire functional stoneware, and decorative raku vessels. Although I discovered studio ceramics later in life, I’m currently in the process of making the mental transition from an academic to a full time potter.
