My greatest past-time as a child growing up in Arkansas's Grand Prairie was playing in the dirt and mud, which was plentiful in this flat rice-growing country. By adding cut grass, I could mix the mud to a consistency that would hold itself up and make little 'sculptures', adding other things found in the area such as rocks, twigs, pine cones, sweet gum balls; anything that would add interest. My kiln was the hot Arkansas sun which, in no time, baked my creations to triple digit hardness. I credit my love of nature to my wonderful Great Aunt Grace who lived on a large farm with a lot of woods; it was my favorite place to visit. We took long walks through the woods, always with a bag of some sort, gathering prized pieces of bark, wood ears, rocks, seed pods, and moss and would create fantastical works of art upon our return to the house. Little did I imagine that doing much the same would bring me such pleasure some 30 years later!
Today, my work is greatly influenced by those same things that intrigued me so as a child; the bark and roots of trees, the texture and color of rocks, emerging flowers and vegetation, moss, the sand patterns in a creek bottom or on an ocean beach after the tide has gone out, the colors in a sunset and nature's endless combinations of these elements. By adding my own style and design, I combine various techniques and materials to create unique artwork for the home and garden that I hope you will enjoy as much as I enjoyed creating them.
Brenda Moore has been working in clay since 1990, but chose it as a full-time craft in 2006. Although she began by throwing functional pots on the wheel, she now creates unique hand-built sculptures for the garden and home out of earthenware clay using slab, pinch, and coil techniques. Other materials such as copper and rock are sometime incorporated into these sculptures. She also works with construction foam and a fiberglass-enforced cement to create deck and patio plaques and large, lightweight sculptures for the garden. Other interests include fishing, traveling, reading and glass beadmaking.
She is an exhibiting member of City Gallery, Inc., Galax, VA, and has work in The Other Half and The Mill Stone Gallery, Winston-Salem; Executive committee member, Whimsical Women; Handbuilding instructor, Sawtooth School for Visual Art; owner of Mossy Rock Creations; has worked with clay since 1990.
Awards: First Place, Clay Classic, Yadkin Valley Craft Guild, Elkin, NC; Best of Show, Grand Prairie Festival of Arts, Stuttgart, AR
